Frequently Asked Questions

  • Everyone is welcome regardless of their relationship to Islam, as long as they are respectful of diverse Islamic opinions. Queer Muslim Network is an inclusive space for those who identify as Muslim, were raised Muslim but may not be practicing, are friends/family with queer Muslims, seeking to reconnect with Islam, and more! All are welcome.

  • QMN is a non-hierarchichal space comprised of Muslims from across all sects. Disrespect and slander towards other sects is not welcome.

  • We encourage attendees to bring food and drinks to share. All food should be nut-free, alcohol-free, and halal. We strongly encourage compliance with the Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions movement.

  • Being 'out' is not a requirement! Many of our attendees, volunteers, and executives are not publicly queer. QMN uses blue & red name tag stickers at every event to make sure no one is ever accidentally posted without their consent.

QMN events are designed to foster community, so coming alone is never discouraged. If you're nervous, let a QMN executive or volunteer know that you came alone and they can connect you to queer Muslims who share your interests!

  • Our resources page can direct you to many organizations and resources.

Please note: Queer Muslim Network does not currently provide crisis support or any services helping with immigration or obtaining refugee status. Please reach out to the following relevant organizations who may be able to provide support.

  • When you arrive to a QMN event, expect to be greeted by a team member who will sign you in and give you a colour-coded name tag. If you consent to photos, you will receive a blue name tag, and if you do not consent to photos, you will receive a red name tag. The safety and privacy of our community members is top priority to us, as we know Queer Muslims are a vulnerable group.

Once you are in the event, you might be overwhelmed by the number of community members present. For so long, queer & trans Muslims are made to feel like we are the only ones who feel this way, and coming to QMN events will quickly prove that wrong. You will see a diversity in sect, gender, ethnicity, and age, although most of our organizing committee is made up of youth. Folks in the community are always looking to make new connections, so expect to leave with new friends.

  • Feel free to wear whatever feels comfortable and gender-affirming to you! We do not follow the traditional interpretations of modesty and encourage folks to show up as their authentic selves.
